Shelters unite in Vietnam to end the cruel dog meat trade

Last weekend in Vinh City, Vietnam, Soi Dog Foundation delivered practical training to 10 local groups working throughout Vietnam to tackle the dog and cat meat trade.

The Advanced Shelter Management Training Workshop involved key government officials in an effort to strengthen political and public support to end the dog meat trade and provide humane care for rescued animals.

The workshop was given by the Asia Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA), a coalition that includes Animal Asia, Humane Society International, Soi Dog Foundation, Change for Animals, and Four Paws. The training included disaster sheltering considerations, preventative health protocols, and tips to keep sheltered animals healthy.

Mr Duong Tat Thang, the Director of Area 3 Animal Health, delivered the opening speech. He pledged to work with ACPA to fulfill Vietnam’s commitment to (1) eliminate rabies by 2020 and (2) end the illegal dog meat trade.

Soi Dog hopes to continue to work with local groups and authorities in Vietnam to curtail large-scale transport and consumption of dogs and cats.
