Rosies News (Day 4)

This morning, Rosie didn’t want to eat by herself again. I had to force-feed her. And she kept whining in the cage too, but I had to go to work.

By the time I got home from work, she had already removed the whole bandage and the catheter in her paw was exposed. Oh no! I quickly put on the e-collar.

She was angry….

Soon, it was time for her appointment.

The vet observed Rosie and remarked that she looked “better” in that she is more active and curious. She jumped up the table and wandered around, and yes, she didn’t look sick.

But here’s the thing: She also did not look sick 4 days ago, but actually, she was seriously jaundiced. Another worry was that, this looked like a slow-progressing illness and it appeared that Rosie had “got used” to it. That may not be a good thing.

But anyway, there’s a bit of good news….

The vet palpated her liver and…..yes, it is significantly smaller!!

Oh, yay!!!!

But wait, we cannot celebrate too soon….we need to take a blood test and see the ALT readings. If it has gone down significantly, THEN we can celebrate a little….

Assuming she has improved (from the significantly smaller liver today), it means the medicines are working.

Rosie is on the following:

Morning
Doxycycline (antibiotics)
B-complex for appetite
Samylin (liver supplement) – contains silybin (milk thistle extract), Vit C and Vit E
Liv-52 (liver supplement)

Evening
Baytril (antibiotics)
B-complex

I’ve also added Maximus Hep (from Petdiatrics), with the approval of the vet. It also has silymarin (milk thistle) properties.

The plan is to continue with the medicines and supplements. Meanwhile, it’s also time to take another blood test today.

Also, since Rosie has the catheter, we might as well also put her on drips for fluids (to flush out any toxins) for a few hours, so we left her at the vet’s from 2.30pm to 6.30pm.

The blood test results will only be known tomorrow.

Another bit of good news is that Rosie’s weight has remained at 3.6 kg (using the clinic scale).  No weight loss since Friday. This is also a good thing.

When we picked up Rosie this evening, the vet said she didn’t make a single sound after we left, when she was in the cage with the drips. Not a single sound.

And yet, at home, she demands to be let out!!

The catheter was removed this evening. If need be, we will send her back for subcut fluids.

Back home….with Heidi accompanying her.

But…Heidi doesn’t seem to recognise Rosie also. She hissed at Rosie. Only Ginger and Zurik recognises her.  Ginger sits next to her. Zurik tries to intimidate her. So yes, Zurik remembers Rosie.  The saddest part is, Daffodil does not remember Rosie at all. When Rosie tried to go near Daffodil, Daffodil hissed at her.

This is really sad. We hope in time, Daffodil will remember Rosie.

Vincent stays in the porch, so we don’t know if Vincent remembers Rosie.

Very yellow urine, because of of the jaundice.

Jaundice occurs when there is too much bilirubin (a yellow pigment) in the blood—a condition called hyperbilirubinemia. … Bilirubin is then moved through the bile ducts into the digestive tract, so that it can be eliminated from the body. Most bilirubin is eliminated in stool, but a small amount is eliminated in urine.

The vet said sometimes it is even orange in colour. I thought the yellow colouration was due to the B-Complex, but the vet says it’s the jaundice.

Rosie has not passed motion since Friday. This is probably due to her being caged up and she is not used to it. The vet says that’s normal for a free-roaming cat and it’s okay, even if up to 5 days. We gave her Lactulose tonight. Hopefully, we will see some stools tomorrow.

Many thanks to Peggy Tiong, for giving Rosie 5 capsules of this excellent supplement.  Peggy’s outside-cat also had serious liver problems and was on this supplement. The cat is fine now. And many thanks to Connie for giving Rosie a whole can of Royal Canin Recovery.

Rosie is still on ID (less oil).

Rosie and all of us thank everyone here for sending prayers and healing wishes to her.

Thank you so very much!!
