Our heartfelt appreciation to Soi Dog supporter and adopter Sam McElroy for this beautiful poem in memory of Soi Dog co-founder Gill Dalley.

WITHOUT YOU

Where do we we begin without you? Without you, the constellation of compassion is missing the brightest of stars.

Without you, a void has been created that will never be filled, without you, dearest Gill.

Without you, a leader has been lost. Lost in the midst of the fight. A fight which must now go on in your name. Together, in your name, we will aim to end the shame.

Without you in the world we�re left heartbroken and hollow, who now do we follow in the battle against sorrow, who�ll lead us into tomorrow, if not you, dearest Gill?

Without you we must learn to live with regret at just how much you had to give was left.

Left behind in too much haste, life�s a habit of making mistakes, and on this occasion it�s the greatest of wastes.

But, without you, the matriarch of the foundation, respected in so many nations, without your creation, all of this would just be imagination.

Without you, whose passion and vigour and ‘no shit will I take’ saw you through times of toil and trouble and so much heartbreak, so many would be lacking the inspiration you have ignited, the passion passed on, the legacy cemented, we said we were in awe and we meant it.

Without you, of whom so many are thankful, reality would just be dreams, government shelters bursting at the seams, with dogs and cats not knowing what love means.

Without you, thousands more wouldn�t have hope for the future, but now all have the possibility of homes with care and nurture.

Without you, so many friendships both human and canine, would not have been realised, just lost moments in time.

Without you, my Soi Dogs don�t sleep tight at night, don�t have the comfy bed and the right to live without fright. They don�t have their happy walks and long human talks, their sense of family and the �I love you and you love me�.

Without you, one day, we must learn again to breathe, to laugh again after the time to grieve. The time to grieve and disbelieve at why the �eck you had to leave.

Soi Dog Foundation

Established in 2003 in Phuket, Thailand, Soi Dog is Southeast Asia's largest organisation helping stray animals. The Gill Dalley sanctuary in Phuket is home to over 1,600 animals. Soi Dog also has a treatment facility in Bangkok and responds to crisis situations throughout Thailand.
