RAHAYU , OUR MALAYSIAN GIANT TURTLE GOES HOME!
Today, Rahayu, our Malaysian giant turtle was repatriated back to her native homeland, Malaysia. She will be eventually released back into the wild, free again. Our sincere thanks to Minister Tan Chuan-Jin for gracing this event. We would also like to extend our thanks to all our supporters and volunteers including the team from the Pet Doctors Veterinary Clinic whose tireless efforts and support has enabled us to achieve this!
Meet Rahayu. She is a 30 kg fully grown Malayan Turtle and is not a native species here. She was found crossing a road and the kind driver loaded her up and brought her to ACRES: Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Singapore). It appears likely she was kept as a pet and abandoned. She had a fish hook embedded as well, probably left behind by some fisherman enthusiast. This species is endangered and is also sought after for meat. It is not easy to send these creatures home but the Malaysian Wildlife Department would be receiving Rahayu in Johor and will reintroduce her back into her world. We can all help by not generating demand for exotic and endangered pets, provide info where relevant and raise awareness. Thanks AVA and Acres for the wonderful work done!
