SNOW FAIRY CRADLES DOG IN -16 DEGREES
It can take hours for Norica Prigoana to shake the cold out of her bones at the end of the day. After all, being the “snow fairy” at a Romanian dog shelter does not come with a sparkling gown or glittering crown. Most days she’s mopping kennel floors, scrubbing food bowls and, yes, kissing foreheads too. But even when she’s hung up her wings for the day and her fingers can barely bend from the cold, it’s not too late to save just one more….
“This little angel, very small in size, was left out to freeze at the fuel station yesterday evening where he spent the night in -16 degrees,” Norica explains with a gusty disbelief that grows with every case of neglect she encounters. “Nobody would put even a cardboard box under his little body. Nobody called us to help. We only found him because we had to fill the car with fuel.”
“He was almost frozen, trembling, without the power to stand up,” Norica continues. “He’s missing one eye and our vet said it was probably caused by an untreated infection.”
And though the shelter is very full with 168 souls, Norica simply had to make one last bed, for one last weary wanderer. There are days when Norica’s own cupboards are very light on supplies, but she always makes sure the dogs have enough to eat and a safe place to sleep. In fact, at the time of this post, Norica has just sent photos of another elderly dog she rescued from the street – this one quite elderly. She’s been given the name Grandma and she too will now need veterinary care, food and shelter.
