MANDAI (DONT MESS, DONT MIND)!
Singapore is home to approximately over 1800 long-tailed macaques, who are a native species here.
Their wild population is naturally kept in tab like many other wild animals, based on availability of food and troop (group of monkeys) dynamics. But unfortunately when individuals complain about monkeys getting close to humans, they may be trapped and culled, or end up becoming a road kill through unfortunate accidents.
Introducing the Mandai troop. We have visited them several times this year and we always see them playing with litter. We see juveniles peeping into empty drink cans, macaque moms carrying plastic bags up trees. All these, because vehicles stop by with people offering food to these macaques, sometimes throwing entire bags of food.
And we are frustrated. Why? Because time and again, regardless of the total feeding ban for macaques in place, people continue to stop their cars at the bus stop to feed macaques with food, resulting in these problems (not to mention there is a high chance that you can get scratched or attacked by these animals):
Over time they would associate people with food and would approach anyone and expect food, and may turn aggressive if food provision does not continue.
Macaques risk getting into trouble when they venture further onto the roads. Some get hit by oncoming traffic becoming road kills.
The food we provide usually contains excessive fats and sugar which is bad for their health.
Feeding monkeys would discourage them for foraging for their own source of food.
Want to help the monkeys in Singapore?
- Allow them to forage for their own food. Please do not feed them.
- Share with friends who may live close to nature areas, along park connectors where there are troops or transient individuals moving across.
- Appreciate them in the wild, but from a distance.
