IT’S THAT RESOLUTION MAKING TIME OF THE YEAR!

As we go about forging great plans for 2017, lets think about our animal friends too.

Here are some simple suggestions you can consider, in no particular order:

1. Enrichment for pets

They say charity begins at home. Besides providing for the basic needs for your pet, think of ways to enrich their lives. Environmental enrichment is a great and easy way to improve the quality of life of any animal. Here are some links to get you started:

2. Be a foster parent

A very meaningful way to help an animal is by looking after one that requires a temporary loving home. Shelters and rescue groups always require the help of fosterers. You can sign up to be an SPCA foster parent here – http://spca.org.sg/helpus_fosterparent.asp

3. Be animal-friendly on holiday

2017 brings with it seven long weekends! When you go for your well deserved break, do stay away from tourist attractions that exploit animals, people or the environment. This guide provides a good overview of how to be animal-friendly while on holiday – http://www.worldanimalprotection.org/sites/default/files/int_files/animal-friendly-tourism-guide-international.pdf

4. Care for a community animal

Our beloved street dogs and cats rely on us for survival. Here are some ways you can help them – http://spca.org.sg/services_sterilisation_commnity_details.asp?id=241

The SPCA has a programme that supports caregivers and welfare groups by providing sterilisation vouchers to help them offset the high cost of desexing these animals. You can donate to this programme here – https://www.giving.sg/society-for-the-prevention-of-cruelty-to-animals/sterilise_our_community_dogs

5. Reduce or eliminate animal products from your diet

Modern day factory farming causes much animal suffering. An easy way to help, if you are not able to eliminate animal products from your diet, is to reduce your consumption instead. Here is a fantastic locally produced guide to get you started – http://animalallies.sg/Start/

6. Adopt, dont buy

Companionship with an animal brings immeasurable joy, as anyone who has had a pet knows. Thinking of getting one next year? Shelters have many lovely animals waiting for their forever home. Visit http://spca.org.sg/services.asp to check out the animals at the SPCA.

7. Volunteer your time and skills

The animal welfare movement relies on a community of passionate volunteers, committed to helping us advocate the cause. At the SPCA, there are a number of ways you can help. Visit http://spca.org.sg/helpus_volunteer.asp to find out more.

8. Donate

Unable to find the time to help? Donations, either in cash or kind, are always needed and much appreciated. There are lots of ways to give – http://spca.org.sg/helpus.asp

9. Shop cruelty-free

Testing cosmetics and household products on animals is both unnecessary and cruel. You can do your part by purchasing from brands that have stopped animal testing. You can find products which have not been tested on animals here – https://www.crueltyfreeinternational.org/LeapingBunny

10. Spread the message

One of the simplest ways to help is to be an advocate for the animals and spread the message. Your voice can make a difference.
