THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING. FOOD AND AGRICULTURE MUST TOO
With this theme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is today celebrating today WORLD FOOD DAY.
What can YOU do to help tackle climate change?
The FAO recommends diversifying our diet, eating more plant-based food: ¨Try to eat an all-veggie meal (including pulses like lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas) instead of one meat meal a week. More natural resources are used to provide meat than plants or pulses, especially water. Millions of acres of rainforest are also slashed and burned in order to turn the land into grass pastures for livestock including cows.¨
This is a very significant acknowledgment by FAO on the sustainability benefits of reducing meat intake, an action that helps animals, humans, and the planet. This is in addition to their previous statements that point out ¨Livestock is a major threat for the environment: the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport. It is also a major source of land and water degradation.¨
Check below for the full list of recommendations FOA gives to change the world and tackle climate change by modifying your daily habits and making simple decisions. This includes actions such as: Don´t waste water, buy organic, limit your plastic, pick ugly fruit and vegetables or recycling, and of course, eat more plant-based food.
