MEET OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE: CHANGEABLE HAWK EAGLE
Meet the changeable hawk eagle, the largest forest raptor in Singapore. They are an uncommon resident raptor of Singapore. Internationally, there are 6 species of changeable hawk eagle. The species found in Singapore is polymorphic. They come in different morphs with no sexual dimorphism. The two morphs are broadly categories as dark (dark brown) or pale (white). However, their plumage varies. Individuals can have a mix of dark- brown and white plumage. Despite the large variations in their body covering, they all have one characteristic that unites them and that is their screeching calls.
Most of their nests are located on Albizia trees. These trees are tall, making them ideal for raptor nest-making. Albizia trees are located in secondary forests and urban areas throughout Singapore. Any conservation effort for these raptors would have to include preservation of these trees.
Being birds of prey, changeable hawk eagles hunt for their meals. They feed on small vertebrates including rats, squirrels, long- tailed macaques, colugos and changeable lizards. The next time you are out in the forest, keep your eyes and ears open for this magnificent bird!
