WHAT IS IT LIKE TO VISIT A WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTRE?
1. You get to listen to personal stories of the animals you see there.
Being treated as individuals with unique personalities instead of exhibits, the animals’ stories – where/what they were rescued from, how they have been doing so far – are shared through their caretakers at rescue centres. It is definitely more interesting to know about the animals’ amusing/touching/inspiring encounters, rather than just general facts.
2. You realise why that elephant you saw earlier was limping.
Tours at wildlife rescue centres usually provide insights into animal exploitation and the wildlife trade that people often unintentionally contribute to. You will know why those exotic-looking iguanas you saw ended up at the rescue centre in the first place. You will then learn how to avoid becoming an unintentional supporter of the wildlife trade and animal exploitation (for example, the exploitation of elephants in the tourism industry).
3. You feel good knowing that your time and money is well spent funding a meaningful cause.
Many people walk out of rescue centres after their tour feeling an unexplained joy and peace, because they know that their choice for leisure has not brought suffering upon another sentient being. In contrast, they have played a part in the rescue mission itself.
Book a visit to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) with your family and friends, by emailing Joee at joee@acres.org.sg. Visits are upon appointment basis only. We look forward to welcoming you!
P.S. There are no elephants at the AWRC.
