Growing Awareness Of Animal Welfare In China

AWARENESS OF FARM ANIMAL WELFARE IS GROWING IN CHINA, AND AROUND THE WORLD.

In recent years, studies have shown how farm animal welfare has become an important factor for consumers. A recent survey conducted by World Animal Protection revealed that approximately seven out of ten Chinese consumers consider the welfare of farm animals to be important. In addition, an equal number would be willing to pay 5 to 10 per cent more for pork products from pigs that have lived better lives.

Very similar findings come from the US. New research published by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has found that consumers care about the welfare of animals raised for food, and they are paying more and more attention to labels that indicate a higher standard of animal welfare. However, there are many misconceptions about the current standards for animals raised for food and what labels really mean. Consumers care about the treatment of these animals, and they want there to be an objective third party to oversee the animals’ welfare. Consumers also want stores and brands to carry more welfare-certified products, and they would be willing to pay more for those products.

Consumers are the key to making a difference for farm animals, and for making companies improve animal welfare standards. By choosing more “humane” alternatives (such as genuine free-range eggs and meat), reducing your consumption of meat, eggs and dairy, and choosing more plant-based alternatives, you will send a strong message to food companies that you care about the treatment of farm animals.
