Egg Producers Pledge To Stop Grinding Newborn Male Chickens To Death

UNITED EGG PRODUCERS ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL STOP CULLING MALE CHICKENS!

United Egg Producers, America’s largest egg manufacturer (accounting for 95% of all eggs produced in the US), has pledged that all culling of male chicks at hatcheries will be eliminated by 2020, or as soon as it’s “economically feasible” and an alternative is “commercially available”.

Chick culling is the process of killing newly hatched chicks for which the industry has no use. Male chicks will not produce eggs. Therefore, as they are of no commercial use, they are killed soon after hatching- usually using brutal methods such as being ground up alive, crushed, gassed or suffocated.

United Egg Producers says they can replace culling with “in-ovo egg sexing”. New technology developed in Germany and Netherland can determine the sex of each fertilised egg before the chick inside develops. Germany’s Agriculture Minister, Christian Schmidt, advised that ‘chick shredding’ could soon be a thing of the past in Germany — which could make it the first country in the world to stop the practice.

Will the egg industry in Singapore and Southeast Asia use this technology to avoid unnecessary death and suffering too? We hope so!

The pledge by United Egg Producers is another big win for the animal welfare movement — and for baby chickens.
