MCMC To Shut Sites That Sell Animals Illegally - Nation | The Star Online

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT HELP WIPE OUT ILLEGAL ONLINE SALES OF WILD ANIMALS IN SINGAPORE

It is heartening to know that Malaysia is taking steps towards wiping out the illegal sale of wild animals online. The wildlife protection authorities are working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to close down websites and home pages selling wild animals illegally.

This commendable initiative by Malaysia will help to curb the illegal wildlife trade and protect wild animals.

Here is Singapore, the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) monitors the online illegal trade in wild animals through undercover investigations, and we also investigate tip-offs about this illicit trade and organise sting operations to catch illegal sellers in the act.

Most wild animals are prohibited to be kept or sold as pets in Singapore. The list of prohibited species includes primates, most other mammals, amphibians (except the green tree frog), reptiles (except the red-eared slider and the Malayan box turtle), many species of birds and some types of fish. It is illegal to import, export, or introduce these species without a permit. The sale or even display of these animals is an offence under Singapore law.

In our most extensive investigation to date, we monitored 6 online advertising platforms from June to December 2015. All platforms were carrying advertisements for prohibited wild animals (being sold as pets).

Joint sting operations between ACRES and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) have resulted in the seizures of wild animals that were being illegally sold in Singapore, including sugar gliders and an Asian leopard cat.

We continue to work with the owners of advertising platforms to stop the placement of advertisements illegally advertising wild animals for sale.

If you see wild animals being illegally advertised for sale online, please contact the AVA or the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit at acresrime@gmail.com
