Subject: Vet Nurse Position

Hello Dr. Chan,
I so appreciated your thoughtfulness during the horrific rabies scare here in Penang in the fall. Your words were a real comfort in a difficult time.
I am writing again now because Cat Beach Sanctuary is growing daily and we are in need of regular help to address medical issues that arise in the population which now numbers more than 150 cats. We are raising funds for a salary for someone to serve as ‘vet nurse’ and hope that you can help us reach out to find some likely candidates. We may need to have 2 people to cover each other so one can have time off.
Cat Beach Sanctuary Penang seeks experienced cat carers to provide regular nursing care to a growing population, currently at about 150 cats and kittens. A long-term paid position is available for a vet nurse. Volunteers for short-term are also always welcome.
Located on the beach in the fishing village of Teluk Bahang in Penang island’s northwest corner, the Sanctuary is based in an old wooden house and surrounding outbuildings. The cats are free-roaming with only the new, sick or injured kept in cages. All the cats and kittens have been rescued from desperate situations — often life or death — and are brought to Cat Beach as their last resort.
Duties will include giving medications 2-3 times per day as prescribed by veterinarians, assessing health issues in the population, and helping to decide when and if cats need to go to a vet (a long 45-minute drive to the nearest veterinarian). Careful records-keeping will be important including identifying and keeping histories of the cats’ health and gathering information for online posts to encourage adoptions and donations.
With the help of volunteers and a few staff, the vet nurse will also take charge of the monthly deflea / deworm / health checks and annual vaccinations as well as the care for new arrivals and scheduling sterilizations. Monitoring of supplies, training of volunteers to assist, and reporting daily to the director will also be among the responsibilities. Giving special loving care to cats and kittens with flu, injuries and other medical issues will be crucial.
In normal circumstances, the basic care can likely be accomplished in about 4 hours per day with longer hours to be scheduled during the health checks.
Cat Beach Sanctuary can offer a small salary and assist with housing and meals. The Sanctuary is located an hour’s ride from George Town and about 10 minutes from the tourist resort town of Batu Ferringhi. Local attractions within walking distance include the Taman Negara National Park, Escape Adventure Park, the new Entopia (Butterfly Farm), Batik Factory, and the fishing village of Teluk Bahang.
Again, many thanks for your help and for all you do for animals, especially cats.
Best regards,
Teviot & Cat Beach Cats
