I highlighted Pak Din's plight a few months ago: http://www.myanimalcare.org/2011/08/helping-pak-din.html when it was brought to my attention by Chew.
Pak Din is an elderly gentlemanly living in a shack in Gombak. Out of the kindness of his heart and despite his own difficulties, he looks after the neighbourhood dogs and cats by feeding them, taking them to the vet when sick and he even gets them spayed and neutered.
In the last count, he had about 9 dogs (1 mother-dog and 8 puppies) and 8 cats (the number changes as these are all community animals). Some of his neighbours are not too happy with the dogs and two of his dogs had been poisoned too.
Pak Din and the puppies
We raised funds to buy food for Pak Din's animals, but the response was very poor - only RM150. However, since he does not have many animals, whatever we managed to raise was enough. We bought dogfood and catfood for him then. We also subsidised a medical bill for his dogs from our funds.
The Sports Mix dogfood we contributed. We also bought catfood for his cats.
Ever since then, I have been communicating with Chew and enquiring whether more food is needed. Pak Din said it was still enough. Chew has also been looking at ideas on how to help Pak Din, ie. get electricity and water to his shack, get him a job, etc. Pak Din used to be a musician in his hey day. Chew even toyed with the idea of organising a concert to feature (faded) musicians like Pak Din and use that as an avenue for fund-raising. This project is too big for me so I'd leave this to Chew and his friends to organise.
Two weeks ago, Chew said Pak Din needed a pack of dogfood (he doesn't ask for more, only what he needs). We have funds to purchase this, but a friend heard about it, and said he would contribute this pack of food.
Chew has collected the food and will get a friend to deliver the dogfood to Pak Din next week.
A further good news is that Pak Din has been offered a job now - ferrying children from the nearby orphanage to school.
If Pak Din needs further help again, I hope we will all respond and chip in to help him again. For now, hold your horses (!), he does not need anything....yet. And we still have RM150 in store for him.
Have a great Sunday!
