Erm Thank You?

Thats right. There are days when we see objects that we dont think twice about. Many a times, we tend to overlook their worth, or even get exasperated by them. All the more to be thankful for them? Definitely! Why? They do benefit the animals we share the Earth with, both wild and domesticated.

1. Pillows

That soft, cushiony comfort that we dont normally think about until our tired bodies sink into them at the end of the day. Ah yes, its no wonder we spend time reclaiming them from the family dog or cat! But our companion animals can benefit from their own pillows too! Soft bedding can help reduce medical conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia and even calluses. Aside from cats and dogs, young mammals at rescue centres find comfort in snuggling.

2. Speed bumps

Yes, you have to slow down and we know you hate it. But the beauty of speed bumps not only extends to making road crossings safer for children and the elderly, but also for wild animals and the occasional wandering stray dog or community cat. A speed bump might mean your journey takes a bit longer, but it can mean the difference between life and death for a mother wild pig and her piglet crossing the road!

3. Fallen leaves

Some of us might regard fallen leaves strewn all over the ground as messy. But look at it from another way: it is almost therapeutic to feast your eyes upon a landscape with an autumn feel- in Singapore. Fallen leaves, particularly on forest floors, provide food, shelter, insulation and bedding for many wild animals.

4. Manholes

These opaque windows are gentle reminders of the much-needed privacy and protection of an underground crossing for wild animals. Roads and traffic have a detrimental impact on a variety of species, from pangolins to pythons, to monitor lizards and macaques, to domestic cats. Singapores generous and complex drainage systems and culverts are amazing tunnels for mammals and reptiles to commute and hunt away from the dangers of traffic.

5. Air-conditioning units

They provide a home to many birds who have adapted to our urban developments and cityscapes. You might hear chicks tweeting inside, or see the parents flying back and forth to keep the stomachs of the little chicks full. Eventually the chicks will grow up and leave the nest.

What other everyday objects can you think of to be thankful for, for the way that they benefit animals?
