Teaching Vincent To Eat Again

By evening, Vincent still refused to eat and I thought perhaps it’s because he fears opening his mouth due to the past pain experience. He also looked very miserable in the cage and kept sleeping.

So I decided to force-feed him gently. I took him out of the cage and placed him on my lap. I started with a gentle massage. Then, I made the wetfood into small balls and plonked it into his mouth. He wasn’t exactly happy about me opening his mouth, but he swallowed the food (a bit of initial forcing on my part). Very quickly, he learnt that he could eat, after all! So he began swallowing the small balls of food and I kept encouraging him and telling him, “See? You can eat, you can eat!”.

This was followed by me hand-feeding him. He was willing to lick off wetfood from my hand and together, with plenty of coaxing and encouragement, we finished two tablespoons of wetfood just now! After the meal, Vincent looked a little happier.

See Vincent, you can eat!! Eating is no longer painful! Yay!
