SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT WELFARE ISSUES AT DAIRY FARM
The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) recently investigated a report of welfare concerns at a farm housing cows and goats. It was alleged that the animals were being fed food of poor quality. The informant also pointed out that a calf was looking extremely undernourished. Some of the said animals were found to have difficulties in moving due to injuries and neglected hoof care.
The informant also alleged that a calf was chained to the wall of the aisle, where the chains had eaten themselves into the bloody legs of the calf.
Our officers went to investigate and found several welfare issues. These included broken metal roofing which had dropped into a pen housing cows, calves lying on wooden platforms causing abrasions to their knees, and cows having access to chew the ends of water hoses that were hung outside a pen.
Our officers gathered photographic evidence and forwarded the case to the relevant authority for action to be taken. The authority has inspected the farm and is working with the farm owner to improve the management of the farm. The authority has also highlighted that a follow-up inspection will be conducted to ensure better farm management and that measures are put in place to improve the welfare of the animals.
We would like to urge the public to continue to report animal welfare concerns to the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) at acrescrime@gmail.com
We would also like to thank the member of the public who reported this case to us.
