Heidis MIA Story (bearings Gone Wrong?)
Tweet | ![]() |
Heidi was accompanying me this morning, in her usual routine – at 5am, she will jump onto the bed and sleep with me until it’s time for breakfast.
Breakfast was as usual and after that, she followed me to the playground for morning exercise. She does this daily and as always, when I come back, she will not follow back. It’s Zurik who follows back. Heidi will remain at the playground to enjoy the quiet morning where she can watch the birds. And within a few minutes, she would be back in the house.
That is routine for Heidi.
This morning, Heidi was unusually happy and energetic at the park too.
All was well.
But after I got back from the playground, Heidi did not come back. I didn’t think there was any cause for concern as she sometimes like to stay back at the playground.
By lunch time, Heidi did not turn up.
I was a little worried and went up and down the road looking for her and calling out her name
Later in the afternoon, I went round the playground to look for her again.
All the cats were at home, even Zurik. Of course the Bird Family was around while Vincent was sleeping upstairs in the bedroom. Zurik must have sensed something was going on, so he too quickly came back and stayed in the house.
No Heidi.
By evening, I went up and down the road again and even checked all the trees at the playground, in case she had gone up a tree and did not know how to come down (it had happened once before, but she finally made her way down – I had almost wanted to either lug a ladder to the playground or call Bomba that time).
She was no where to be found.
Oh no….this is not very good. All kinds of thoughts went through my mind – was it another toothache again? That time when she had the toothache, she was so fierce and feral and was bleeding from the mouth, I thought she’d been poisoned, but it was just a bad tooth. We could not catch her as she was behaving like a wild cat. She finally came home on her own, almost at midnight, without the bad tooth (it must have fallen off).
My husband came back from work and I told him about Heidi being missing. He went round looking too and calling for her, but could not find her.
After searching on the road and playground, he happened to go all the way across the playground and called for Heidi.
What do you know? Heidi peeped out from the gate of one of the houses there and this house is 180 degrees (directly opposite our house, but separated by the playground by about 200m!). According to my husband, Heidi looked quite comfortable from that gate, but she came out, went up the playground and my husband carried her home.
Imagine my relief!
So, silly little Heidi must have lost her bearings and gone 180 degrees off to the wrong house!
At least that’s what we think.
But she was certainly VERY hungry!
She ate up her food as well as Vincent’s, then sat grooming herself.
Then, a thought occurred – what IF that is Heidi’s house and three years ago (15th July 2013), she lost her way and came to our house??
I mean, isn’t that possible?
So I made my way to the 180 degrees-off house and rang the doorbell. I also took a photo of Heidi along.
A kindly looking elderly man answered the door and as it turned out, no, Heidi is not their pet. They don’t own any cats or pets at all, but the kind man said cats, birds and even a musang like to go to their house even though they don’t feed the animals. I told him it must be because his home exudes kindness so animals like to visit.
Anyway, it is confirmed that Heidi is not their pet.
So, our grand dame is back at home now.
I didn’t know cats can lose their bearings. I often thought that cats are experts are sniffing their way home.
Maybe, like me, Heidi has directional dyslexia? Or maybe, it’s just a one-off episode of losing her way.
In any case, thank goodness we found her!
On hindsight, this could have happened to Timmy too. He must be living somewhere in the neighbourhood now. At least that’s what two psychics told me – Timmy is living with a bunch of cats very near our house and he is happy. Hmm….I live with that hope.
