Mickey, the Miracle is miraculously doing very well!

I went to visit him this afternoon. Mickey was lying down, facing the wall of the cage when I entered the room and turned on the lights, but the moment he heard me, he stood up - I thought, wow...how polite of him. A perfect gentlemanly-cat.

Look...he's standing up just to greet me and be polite.

Hi Mickey! How are you?

He's very friendly.

And adorable, and it is almost like he wants to say something, to communicate.

He even ate some kibbles, as though he wants to show me that he is well.
I just get the feeling that it's as though he is saying "thank you".

Okay, Mickey, you're welcome. So, so glad to see you well and happy.

I went downstairs to talk to the vet's assistants and they spoke so fondly of Mickey. Yes, I'm not surprised at all. Mickey is just so, so adorable and friendly....and likeable. You cannot help but like him. And he is also such a polite cat.

I spoke to the vet who assisted in the operation and she said it was a case of "being really lucky" that they managed to insert a catheter through the penis into the bladder. Cheang (the adopter) had said that if the rupture was not in the frontal area (where it could be repaired), she had told the vets to euthanise because the vet told her there was nothing they could do and Mickey would die a very painful death of being toxified by his own urine. I told Cheang we will not sponsor euthanasia, but will sponsor the surgery to save him.

The rupture turned out to be at the back portion, but the vet managed to insert the catheter in, and this saved Mickey's life.

Here's what I understand from the vet's explanation.

You'll see the rupture is somewhere at the back portion.

The catheter was inserted through the penis into the bladder and now acts as the urethra for the urine to flow out. Those ruptured parts has urine and septicaemia has set in, but Mickey is on antibiotics and the vets say this should take care of the septicaemia. They also expect the ruptured parts to heal on its own in 3-4 days, after which the catheter can be removed and Mickey would be fine. The sphincter holds the catheter in place.

Amazing how the body works to help us heal, right?

As it is, Mickey already started eating on his own yesterday itself, even before he was fully awake from the anaesthesia. That was a very encouraging sign.

He is also urinating on his own through the catheter. And today, he specially showed me that he was eating.

I think what really helped here is that Mickey came from a home with lots of love and has been well taken care of. Most importantly, Cheang did not wait or delay. The moment she noticed Mickey wasn't urinating, she called me and said it was an emergency (indeed, it was). Not delaying treatment saves lives. So, please...never, never, never delay if you suspect your pet is not well. Bring them in as soon as you can.

And I think it also helped that Mickey is such a cheerful and happy animal. The positivity really helps.

We hope and pray Mickey will continue to recover and will be fit enough to go home soon.

Mickey's surgery is estimated to cost around RM1500. Cheang has applied to PetFinder.my for assistance and the maximum amount from them is RM500. We will cover the balance. As of today, an anonymous donor has offered to share the balance of the bill with us - thank you so much!
