BARF Treat For Lunch
Tweet |
All the cats had a BARF treat for lunch today!
One tray isn’t enough anymore now that they are eating more BARF, so I used two trays today.
It’s been slightly more than a week of “training” and switching them to a BARF diet. We started with just a little bit and initially only Cleo, Bunny, Indy and Tabs were willing to eat it. Cleo loved it instantly, of course. Cow, Tiger and Pole refused to eat on the first two days. Then, slowly, as I mixed it with their Monge canned food, they were willing to eat it. Since yesterday, they were already willing to eat BARF on its own.
The confirmed obligate carnivore – Cleo. Born in a wardrobe, never been a stray, but has all her primal instincts intact. Cleo wonders why I’ve taken 9 years to realise that BARF is the “real” food for her.
Feeding Bunny is very tricky because if he likes the food, he eats way too fast, so he will end up vomiting later. So he has to be fed slowly. I mixed some Monge with his BARF.
Tiger, who thinks he is a vegetarian, is also eating BARF now, on its own! When he was small, he refused to eat “meat” when it was visible as meat. He only ate kibble (masked meat).
I never thought I’d see the day Pole would be willing to eat raw food!
I’m also surprised that Tabs took a liking to it without the need of much “switching”.
I did not scoop enough BARF so Indy and Cow are having a mixed meal. But they too are able to eat BARF on its own now. Cow eating BARF is a great achievement! He was totally reluctant one week ago.
Outside, all the five cats (Daffodil, Ginger, Rosie, Heidi and especially Vincent) loved BARF right from Day One. No training or switching required at all.
Mr Zurik did not come for lunch. He remains the only cat now who is unwilling to eat BARF. I will feed him his Monge and Iskhan kibble separately.
As suggested by Coco&Joe, I am giving all the cats natural yoghurt so that they have more probiotics in their system, for better digestion. But I only do this once in two days, and only a teaspoon each.
BARF is easily digested and I’ve noticed that their stools are a lot smaller and has hardly any odour!
