Vincent Back From Surgery.and EATS!!!

Vincent’s surgery was done at 5.00pm and it took about half an hour. The vet found that Vincent’s teeth are all still very strong and good. The inflammation is reddest at the two back vestigial teeth (something like our wisdom teeth), so these two teeth were removed. That’s all. The rest of his teeth are still very good so they were left intact. A bit of tartar was removed too.

The small white part is what is visible to us (yes, it’s that tiny) while the reddish part is the root of the tooth. These are the two back teeth.

The white thing I’m pointing at is the bit of tartar removed.

Nothing much needed to be removed, but steroid injections were given into the inflamed gums.

So what caused Vincent’s gum inflammation then? It’s just him and how his gums react to the bacteria in the mouth. It’s a very individual problem.

Will this recur? Yes, it probably will, and our protocol now is to put him on a kibble diet (wetfood might cause the gum inflammation to be worse), turmeric and fish oil. Oxyfresh pet gel or the Oxyfresh deodoriser (to be put in the drinking water) might be helpful too. We will just have to manage his problem. A little wetfood, when necessary, is alright. But his diet should contain more kibble.

As for the next few days, he should be strictly on kibble alone as there are pockets in his gums (already cleared) and we wouldn’t want wetfood to lodge into these pockets. All the pus have been cleaned up.

Vincent was still a little big groggy when we got home at about 7.30pm.

Since he was not fully awake, I only offered him water.

At about 8pm, Vincent started calling. I thought he might be hungry, so…

He ate up the first helping and asked for more.

It’s really such a joy to see him eat so heartily and enjoy his food!

For the second helping, I sprinkled turmeric and poured a bit of fish oil onto the kibble.

Initially I was wondering how I could give him the turmeric and fish oil without wetfood. The vet said to just put it into the kibble.

It worked!

I’m hungry and I want more!!!

He kept asking for more food, so all in all, he has now eaten FIVE helpings. I guess it’s been more than a month of coping with all this gum pain and he hadn’t enjoyed a meal for too long.

He is still asking for food now but we will let the food settle down first!

I’m amazed and thankful that the surgery worked so well.

Vincent will be on daily fish oil and turmeric from now on. It’s going to be a challenge managing his “reactive” mouth (the inflammation is caused by his own body’s reaction to the bacteria in his mouth – we all have bacteria in our mouths), but one step at a time.

Thank you very much to the vet for the careful and thoughtful consultation and surgery and thank you very much to everyone who wished Vincent well.

Vincent says “I’m hungry!!! And I want to eat!!”.
