Pet Bereavement Days… In Some Places
The scheme is intended to help people grieving but you have to live in a certain part of the world to take advantage. People with pets often say they’re just like one of the family, and now one employers are offering time off for their sad passing. Pet bereavement days are fully-paid days to deal with the sadness and grief of a pet dying in the US at least.
It comes following research that suggests 30% of pet owners surveyed felt grief and sadness for at least six months after losing an animal. Pet insurer Trupanion, based in Seattle, offer one day off, while software company VM Ware and Maxwell Health are flexible with the offer. Others can give up to three days as required by the staff member.
Pet loss counsellor Janet Zimmerman said: “Its really very, very difficult to function, and if you cant function, you certainly cant function at work, and youre really not the person you were before. “You need the time to get back to some sense of normality, she told KLFY .
If you’re a cat person and your perfect puss passes away, you might need some time. Trupanion employee Erica Lee says when her dog Chief died , work was the last thing on her mind. Chief was the best dog ever. He was very sweet, loving. I was heartbroken.
“Being able to stay home with him and grieve with him was invaluable. It was so, so important to me,” she added.
It may be some time before we see companies in Malaysia acknowledging the grief of losing a beloved pet, but it’s encouraging to read this news.
