Inside Korean Dog Farms

Inside Korean Dog Farms

Over 2 million dogs are killed for their meat every year in South Korea. Estimated to be a $2 billion industry, dog meat is most commonly eaten during the hot summer months in a spicy stew called “Boshintang.”

On a recent visit to South Korea, Business Insider went inside two farms where dogs would either be sold off as meat or to illegal dog fighting rings. They also spoke with the farmers to get their perspectives on the controversial dog meat and dog fighting trades.

According to Animal Welfare Institute, although there is evidence suggesting that dog meat consumption occurred in South Korea over a thousand years ago, the non-profit International Aid for Korean Animals claims that the practice is not one that is deeply embedded into the history and culture of South Korea: “Even during desperate times… the consumption of dog was not a dietary tradition. Like anywhere else, dog was eaten only as a last-ditch resort to avoid starvation. Then sometime in the last century the practice was taken up by a few older men for mythical health benefits regarding virility.”

Dog fighting and dog-meat consumption still happens around the world and the only way to stop it is through unity. Only with unity, we can make a difference.

Many dogs at http://PetFinder.my are still waiting for a life-changing moments. Although they might not be eaten, but they are still fighting for their lives and a forever home.
