Vet Dines With Abandoned Dog

Vet Dines With Abandoned Dog

Sometimes all it takes to comfort someone having a rough time is to come down to their level. And that is exactly what a US vet in Georgia did when he climbed into a cage and ate his breakfast, from a dog bowl no less, with neglected pitbull Graycie.

Dr Andy Mathis decided the best way to comfort the abandoned dog was to get up from his dining table and get onto the concrete floor next to Graycie for his morning cereal and coffee. The unique dining experience was caught on video and shows Dr Mathis sitting cross-legged next to a very frightened looking Graycie who is cowering in the corner.

He then serves up Graycie’s breakfast and then his own, and with a bit of prompting, Graycie follows Dr Mathis’ lead and starts happily crunching on her food. The pair then sit by side eating their breakfast together, Graycie clearly put at ease by Dr Mathis presence in her enclosure.

Graycie was found by a member of the public in a very poor condition on a dirt road in a remote location. The rescuer called Granite Hills Animal Care where Dr Mathis works and was told to bring the dog in. Graycie was emaciated, weighing only nine kilograms, dehydrated, hypothermic and had a vaginal prolapse. “Practical me [said] I should put her to sleep, but veterinarian me [wanted] to try and give her a chance,” Dr Mathis said.

Thankfully, over a number of days, emergency vets were able to raise Graycie’s temperature, reduce her prolapse and rehydrate her. Within a week Graycie had relaxed, gained some weight and her blood levels slowly improved. Although she had been eating, she was uncomfortable eating in the presence of others. “If I walk in there, up to her cage, she backs up into the corner,” Dr Mathis said. This prompted Dr Mathis to join her for a meal and get her more accustom to human interaction. “Hopefully she will learn to trust people quickly.”

Graycie will hopefully be available for adoption soon if her condition keeps improving. Just like the many dogs at http://PetFinder.my, they all need love and care, and a place in your home.
