MAN FILMS NEIGHBOR BEATING DOGS

POLICE USE BATTERING RAM TO BREAK DOWN DOOR

Detroit resident Tim England began filming on his smartphone last week when his volatile neighbor appeared to be acting strangely toward Meatball, a 98 pound Mastiff. What began as a puzzling encounter on the back deck of an Eastpointe home, quickly turned violent.

“He used the back of his first to hit the dog,” England told Fox 2 News. “He went inside and pushed the dog on the ground, kicked the dog in the face, pushed him back on the ground kicked him again, went inside and came back out. That’s when he started pushing him against the house.”

England’s fiancee immediately called 911 for help. And though an arrest warrant was issued against Meatball’s “owner” the wheels of justice move slowly. Days later the attacker was still free and Meatball remained locked inside the house in unknown condition.

That’s when England turned to Detroit Pit Crew for help. The rescue group immediately posted the case on Facebook and asked their 94,000 followers for help. That post unleashed a firestorm of calls to the police department, demanding immediate action to enter the house and see if Meatball was still alive.

Days later, police used a battering ram to enter the home. There inside the house they found Meatball, all alone.

Thankfully Meatball did not sustain any serious injuries. He had a healthy appetite and a gentle disposition during his examination at a local veterinary clinic. In fact, the resilient Meatball will be up for adoption soon.

The 24-year-old man accused of beating Meatball is now in custody and faces criminal charges. Video evidence will play a key role in this case.

Some residents question whether or not justice would have come for Meatball had it not been for the video evidence and for the avalanche of support from the Facebook community. Share this story as a reminder to others of the power of social media which can sometimes bring a tipping point to stalled cases of animal cruelty and neglect.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
