Did you know that the World Wetlands Day falls on 2 February each year? Olga Willnelia, our Miss Conservation 2015, has this to say about wetlands:
“I never realised how beautiful wetlands could be until my first visit to Klias wetland last year. I even spotted some proboscis monkeys perched on the trees by the river!
After that trip, I started reading more about wetlands and found out that besides providing Sabah with tourism opportunities, our wetlands also guard our coastlines from erosion, and provide natural barriers to prevent rivers from flooding. There are many fishermen, paddy farmers, and travel and tourism operators who depend on wetlands for their livelihoods.
It is sad to note that despite wetlands’ importance to our survival, according to the Ramsar Convention about 64% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900. Freshwater species populations in wetlands have also declined by 76 % between 1970 and 2010.
A wetland is not a wasteland, but a land of many opportunities. We need to appreciate our wetlands more. This weekend, please visit the nearest wetland and find out how you can support conservation in wetlands.”
