Infused Water Craze!

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

In this case, it’s DRINK water. As much as you like. And add it natural flavours and nutrients.

My latest craze is making infused water!

I was having a discussion with a nutritionist-pharmacist the other day on nutrition for cancer patients and anyone in general. He mentioned the benefits of using infused water. In blended juices, pure juices or boiled herbs where the fruit/vege/herb is “disturbed” a great deal and hence, made “complex”, absorption of nutrients is not as effective, especially for people who are ill or weak. Whereas in infusions, the nutrients of the fruit/vege subtly and gently seep into the water over time and this produces a “simple” mixture whereby the nutrients are in its more “pristine” form and are hence, more easily absorbed by the body. Also, in blends and juices, one may be concerned about ingesting the sugars and carbos from the fruit, especially for people who are watching their sugar and carbo intake.

So I started reading up on infused water and got really excited about it. You can almost put any fruit and vegetables into the water, let it infuse for 4-8 hours and voila, you’ll have your tangy, zesty and nutritious flavoured water!

Don’t know what drinks to serve for CNY? Try infused water! You can prepare it within 4 hours and your guests will get a very personally and uniquely flavoured water from you! Each preparation is special.

One website said that we do “drink with our eyes”.  I guess we do. Infused water looks really pretty with the fruit slices floating in it, so it would make us want to drink more. And it tastes SO refreshing! And since it’s water, you can drink it the whole day. I mean, if it’s juices or blends, how many glasses can you make a day? With infused water, you can make an entire pitcher and drink it all day long.

Take a look at some recipes here: http://www.loseweightbyeating.com/infused-water/

It’s SO easy to make – you could use just one fruit/vege or two, or more!

And this sums it up:

The best thing about drinking infused water or detox water is that you can try any combination of fruits and herbs to create your own recipes. Try adding fruits you really like or some you’ve never tried before. When it comes to making detox water, the sky’s the limit. The most important thing to remember is that any recipe works, as long as it helps you drink more water. Enjoy!

I did my first infused water last night and it was really subtly and tangily refreshing.

And here’s what I tried today:

In the red pitcher, I have apple, pineapple, blueberries and ginger. In the green, it’s mint, lemon and cucumber!

If you want to make alkaline water, use lemon and a pinch of pink Himalayan rock salt. This makes alkaline water!

Always use glass pitchers. My pitchers above are from Pyrex and the glass is BPA-free. It’s on sale at more than 50% discount at Parkson’s right now. Comes with matching double-walled glasses too. It’s a steal!

Infusions are so easy to prepare: Just let the fruit/vege sit in in the water at room temperature or in the fridge if you prefer, for 4-8 hours and the water tastes absolutely refreshing and zesty with just enough “hint” of all the flavours in it. And you just need a few slices of each fruit/vege. Not too much. Be subtle, be gentle.

And what do you do with the fruit after drinking up all the infused water. Some websites say to discard it, but I freeze it and later, blend it together with my juices. There isn’t much taste left in it, but it still has fiber and it’s still good food, especially if you use organic fruit and veges.

And here’s what I noticed, if you let it infuse for more than 12 hours, most of the fruit has no more taste left in them. This means, most of its ingredients have already been infused into the water. This is unlike boiling soups where, for example, the red dates and goji berries still have lots of taste in them after being boiled for even 2 hours.

Tomorrow, I’m infusing kiwi fruit, pear, grape, orange, etc… Truly, the sky’s the limit!

Try it?

Be creative and have lots of fun!!

Drink (healthily) to your heart’s content!
