SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT HOUSE TIPS FOR RED-EARED SLIDER

August 2015, the Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) went down to investigate a case of abandonement where a pair of red eared slider (RES) was alleged to have been provided with insufficient care.

It was reported that the RES were found near the common rubbish chute along a HDB flat. The sliders were found in terrible conditon (milky water, decomposing food, chicken bones etc). The container containing the RES was rather small for the full grown sliders and barely had water provided. No elevation of container was also done to provide with basking facility.

We approached the owners to advise them on providing better care for the RES and after several followup investigations, the sliders as at January 2016 are provided with much better care and environment. A proper diet has also been advised and owners have agreed to make the necessary changes.

The RES often found for sale (legally) in pet shops as hatchlings, they are bought to be kept as pets. They are often on sale for just a few dollars, encouraging impulse-buying. Unfortunately, many people dont realise that these tiny hatchlings – just 1.5 inches in length – will grow to 13 inches long in just a few years, or that they may live for 50 years or more.

RES are also purchased for the purpose of mercy release (the act of releasing animals which is believed to generate good karma).

Abandoning or releasing animals in public parks (and other areas) is illegal in Singapore.

Under the PARKS & TREES REGULATIONS, MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF NATIONAL PARKS, NATURE RESERVES AND PUBLIC PARKS – 10.(1) No person shall, except with the approval of the Commissioner – leave, abandon or release any animal in a national park or public park.

If you find yourself unable to care for your pet, be responsible and find him or her a new, permanent home. ACRES does not encourage the purchase of RES, as it is difficult to cater to their needs in captivity. If you do keep them as pets, ensure that you are able to care for them for their lifetime.
