OSTRICH, THE JAVAN MYNA GETS HIS FREEDOM
Every now and then, we come across odd rescue situations. This rescue we faced at 231 Yishun Street 21 was one of the strangest. A Javan myna (named Ostrich by us) got his head stuck in a gap on the ledge of the HDB block. Lucky for him, a vigilant resident from the 5th floor spotted the bird struggling on the other side of the block on the 6th floor and called ACRES.
When we arrived to the house where Ostrich was stuck, we had to overcome another situation where two children who could only speak Mandarin were alone in the house, and it could be a real problem if they misunderstand the intention of two non-mandarin speaking officers trying to enter their house to rescue the bird. Luckily, we managed to get our colleague from our office to translate for us and the boys were kind enough to let two big strangers in.
We thought about climbing onto the ledge but it was far too risky and dangerous. We decided to improvise and use our snake grabber and hook to try and nudge Ostrich out. The risk with this method is that Ostrich might break his neck while struggling. We had a net on standby to net him if we managed to free him but to our surprise….Ostrich managed to immediately fly away!
