SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT DO YOUR PART TO END ANIMAL CRUELTY
In March 2015, the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) conducted undercover investigations into the illegal trade in tiger parts in Singapore. This was a follow-up investigation from our previous stint five years ago and we found less than 3% of the shops offended.
In May 2015, the ACIU conducted undercover investigations into animal welfare at pet shops and farms selling dogs and/or cats. A startling 83% of farms and 38% of pet shops failed to comply with basic animal welfare requirements prescribed by law. We disclosed our findings to the public, and made a plea to consumers to make ethical decisions.
The result – undercover investigations into the conditions in the same pet shops and farms as at November 2015 revealed that all but 1 pet shop now provides basic animal welfare, and welfare standards in most farms improved as well.
We also conducted a six-month long undercover operation from June to 15 December 2015. The aim was to investigate the use of online advertising platforms by wildlife traffickers to ply the illegal wildlife trade. Such advertisements are illegal. During this period, we recorded a total of 156 illegal pet advertisements online. Pursuant to tip-offs, we also staked out dealings originating from illegal pet advertisements. This culminated in joint stings with the AVA that saw the seizures of animals such as sugar gliders and an Asian Leopard Cat meant for the illegal wildlife trade.
The ACIU needs funds to continue driving enforcement of animal protection laws. Your money will help us acquire the essential equipment, training, and officers – who bravely and wholeheartedly assume risks every day to give animals the protection and justice they deserve.
The ACIU is at the forefront to end animal cruelty and tackle the illegal wildlife trade. We need YOUR help: Gather photo/video evidence and report cases of animal cruelty to us at acrescrime@gmail.com. Educate others on animal protection issues, such as the illegal wildlife trade and animal cruelty. Lets all work to end animal cruelty together.
