Proper New Home For 1,600 Strays - Community | The Star Online

A NEW RM1.8mil animal protection centre will be set up by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Seberang Prai in Juru.

It will house 1,600 strays and come with two dog kennels, a cat kennel, an administrative office, an animal care section, a kitchen and a janitor’s room upon completion next year.

There will also be a multipurpose open barn for holding animal talent shows, awareness campaigns and fundraising activities.

SPCA Seberang Prai president Tan Kah Chuah said the centre would sit on a 1.59ha plot in the central Seberang Prai district, located between Sungai Jawi and Sungai Junjung Mati in Juru.

“The centre will be the new home for about 1,200 dogs and 400 cats.

“The major building will house the office and animal care section that provides medical treatment.

“We will spend RM110,000 on that,” she said after a site visit recently.

Tan said there would be one big dog kennel and a smaller one, each costing about RM250,000.

She said the big kennel would be the primary housing area of about 800 dogs with open-air free roaming space.

She added that the smaller one could accommodate 400 dogs, including adult dogs and puppies.

“We also have a RM90,000 five-room cat kennel that can take in 400 cats.

“The remaining sum will be spent on earthwork, hoarding (fencing), laying of roads and getting electrical and water supplies,” she said.

Tan said work on the project began one month ago, adding that the workers were clearing the land at the moment.

“We hope the project will be completed in six months, depending on the availability of funds.

“Once completed, at least half of the land will be occupied with buildings and infrastructure.

“In our proposal, we also plan to run minor agricultural activities to generate side revenue to make up for the operational cost,” she said.

Tan said the land belonging to State Secretary Incorporated had since been mortgaged to Seberang Prai Municipal Council.

She said the council then sub-mortgaged the land to them.

“We need to pay a total sub- mortgage fee of RM21,166 per year with 30 years of sub-mortgage terms.

“We paid RM5,291 in deposit on May 14, followed by RM22,435 paid on June 30 for the first year, inclusive of the Goods and Services Tax,” she said.

Tan also thanked one of her donors, Pencil Box (1 Humanity Team Society) chairman Tan Kok Kuang, who donated RM273,000 towards the project.

“We hope to provide a clean, welcoming and safe place for stray animals and to offer professional medical care for them.

“SPCA encourages humane handling and caring of animals through activities and campaigns,” she said.

SPCA Seberang Perai

The SPCA Seberang Perai is a society registered in September 2005. Our primary aim is to reduce the population of stray animals or possibly a zero stray population in a humane manner. With lesser strays or no strays at all, the loving value of animals will be greatly increased and you can be sure that humans will shower more love for their pets and be responsible pet owners. The problem should not only be shouldered by our Society as the public must also understand the urgent need to control the pet population and give their whole-hearted support to all our projects for the undertaking to be successful. Then we will achieve a clean and hygienic environment for the community. As a no killing organization, we are embarking on a two-prong approach towards the problem i.e public education and sterilization of the stray animals.
