Slow Loris Animal Cruelty

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT HUNTED AND DEFANGED FOR CAPTIVITY

Did you know that the slow loris – the only venomous primate – is native to Singapore? Tragically, these beautiful creatures often find themselves victims of the illegal wildlife trade, as their appealing look makes them popular as exotic pets. The demand for slow lorises as pets is one of the factors driving them towards extinction.

Heres why slow lorises are not suitable pets:

1. They are wild animals! Keeping them in captivity prevents them from expressing their natural behaviours, which is likely to cause them to suffer.

2. They require a complex diet which is hard to provide in captivity.

3. They are nocturnal. Keeping them in typical brightly-lit human environments causes discomfort and suffering.

Furthermore, the trade in these animals involves much cruelty. They are often caught from the wild and defanged with pliers, without the use of anaesthesia.

In Singapore, it is illegal to keep or sell slow lorises as pets. However, there have been cases of these primates being illegally kept, sold, or advertised for sale here.

Although Singapore has strong laws protecting animals from the illegal wildlife trade and abuse, few animals benefit from the protection of her laws because they cannot – by themselves testify or gather evidence for prosecution.

The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) seeks to be their eyes and ears, and their voice. By investigating crimes against animals, we give them a fighting chance to attain justice and a better life. Increased prosecution also brings about deterrence, which shields countless animals from future trafficking and abuse.

Many animal traffickers kidnap slow lorises from their homes in the thick jungle and traumatize them by keeping them on busy city streets.
