Soi Dog Foundation

As reported recently, our ongoing work against the illegal dog meat trade often brings to light evidence of the illegal smuggling of wildlife.

Recently, our undercover investigators, while on the look-out for dog meat trade activity, were able to pass information to the Royal Thai Police and the regional Mekong River Unit of the Royal Thai Navy.

This information resulted in the confiscation of a huge number of animals that were destined to be illegally smuggled across the Mekong River to Laos.

The haul included 360 cobras, 100 king cobras, 39 Asian box turtles, and 175 tortoises. The turtles and tortoises are now in the care of the Department of Fisheries, while the cobras and king cobras have been transferred to a National Park nursery, from where they will eventually be returned to the wild.

While the perpetrators got away, the vehicle being used to transport the animals was seized by officers, who are now issuing an arrest warrant for the owner, who will face the following charges:

- The possession and trading of protected species, either alive or dead, without permission (Animal Protection Act)

- The illegal trafficking of protected species – Customs & Excise Act

- Violation of the Animal Welfare Law
