When the very unfortunate and tragic Pet Boarding Cruelty case surfaced on Sunday (that's just 7 days ago), I immediately offered our help with all the cats that needed medical attention.
It was a Sunday, and our panel vets were closed, so the cats were sent to a vet in PJ. A total of six cats were sent in and three were declared fit enough to be sent back (to KTAJ). Another three cats were boarded for treatment; all three were horribly emaciated, their torso were bald (fur bitten off) and they were excruciatingly and unbelievably thin. One was literally skin and bones.
Later, apparently, a dog was also rescued from this boarding place and sent to the same vet. I did not know about this dog until much later.
Maslinda, an independent rescuer who had helped out directly with the rescue mission, has been visiting the cats daily and updating me with news of their progress.
Today, 2 of the cats were finally declared fit to be discharged. They have no more diarrhoea.
I went down this morning to settle the bill and discharge the cats. KTAJ's founder, Nerq Suzana, says they will reimburse us by re-donating back into our fund.
The cats are Mekee (whose owner has been identified), Russian (a blue cat) and Calico.
The two operators of that boarding facility had published a post on their facebook page earlier this week giving a long list of names of cats and 1 dog which they claim were theirs and had urged people to help take care of the cats as they could no longer do so, and not surrender the animals to any animal shelter: http://www.facebook.com/notes/petknode-cat-boarding/amanat-untuk-jagaan-kucing-kucing-kami/10150295696489351 (However, that page has now been removed but here's a screenshot of that page)
We do not know if this Russian and Calico belong to them or any other person for that matter, but our concern was to save their lives, so we provided the medical treatment for them. It was a matter of life and death that day, so we did the needful.
Calico's life was hanging by a thread for the first two days; the vets said her condition was very, very bad. It was so bad that they could not even get blood from her to do bloodwork. Luckily, they could find a vein to insert the drip on the day she was brought in.
It has been 7 days now, and Calico has finally shown improvement. Mekee and Russian are both active but still incredibly thin.
This is Calico.
She is extremely adorable, friendly and "manja".
I'm not sure if she is just "manja" or she may be on heat because she kept rubbing herself on me.
Take a look at these photos, taken specifically just to show you how thin she is. And this is SEVEN days after receiving medical attention.
When I touch her body, it is STILL skin and bones. I asked the vet, and she said it would take sometime before she gradually regains her weight. They also cannot overfeed her as it would cause diarrhoea. So, slow and steady... But at least we are more confident now that she is on the road to recovery.
The vets could finally take blood and do a blood test. Everything is normal. This indicates that Calico was not even sick, just terribly starved? And starved for how long? We know none of those other cats (who had owners) were anything near Calico's emaciated condition.
Besides the 16 cats that died, only Mekee, Russian and Calico were in this terrible state. Mekee's owner (now identified) wrote to say she had surrendered Mekee to the boarding house; Mekee wasn't there for boarding but had been living there for sometime.
The vet said Calico only has a very bad flu, which may have been caused by stress. She also had diarrhoea, but the diarrhoea has stopped now and since yesterday, she could already eat on her own. In fact, she has a good appetite now, but she should not take too much food at one go.
That's Russian and Mekee; also skin and bones.
Mekee's owner will take her back tomorrow.
Russian has a fosterer already.
This is the dog. The vets call her Annie, and they said there was absolutely nothing wrong with her at all.
KTAJ has also found a fosterer for Annie.
Maslinda and Shida bringing Russian and Mekee downstairs. We said bye-bye to Calico. Maslinda will visit her as often as she can.
The three who were discharged today.
KTAJ's rep, Mira, was also present.
I have just checked with Russian and Mekee's fosterer - both are hyperactive and doing very well. There is no more diarrhoea and their appetite is great.
