Of Fireworks, Chelsea And Her 2nd Rescue!

It was in October 2009, six years ago, that we rescued Chelsea and her pups from Bentong.

My friends, Yi Lin and Andrew, fostered the whole family. The pups were all adopted and Chelsea remained with Yi Lin and family.
All was well for six years until early this week when Andrew asked me for the dog pound location. Chelsea had gone missing during the Deepavali fireworks and was nowhere to be found.
Round about this time, a dog was heard howling during the wee hours in the morning in my neighbourhood, which is a fair distance away from Yi Lin’s house. Too far away for me to make any connection, really.
Three days ago, while I was out walking, I spotted this dog wandering on our road and suddenly, I thought of Chelsea. After all, it’s been six years and so many animals, I couldn’t really remember what Chelsea looked like. So I rushed home and quickly searched the blog for Chelsea’s photographs.

This dog looked like Chelsea, but from afar, I saw that she had a stumpy tail while Chelsea had a long tail. Morever, it’s quite impossible that Chelsea could have traveled so far.
But this morning, my husband and I went out for a walk again and spotted the dog. This time, we went nearer and I noticed it wasn’t a stumpy tail, but a curled up long tail. So, we followed the dog. I just had a feeling that this dog might just be Chelsea, even though it seemed highly impossible that Chelsea could have gone all the way from her house, crossed the busy main road (which even humans don’t dare to cross) and landed up in our neighbourhood and on our road. What are the odds of that happening, really?!!
Still, strange and miraculous things do happen. So, we tailed the dog all around our housing area, keeping a comfortable distance so as not to frighten her. As we got nearer, I called out her name, “Chelsea” but there was no response at all.
Soon, the dog got more comfortable with us and we could go nearer. We finally landed up at the park opposite our house and by now, I could already see some markings on her body – the white patch on her chest and small white patches on her feet. She was also wearing a choke chain.
While my husband kept his eye on the dog, I quickly went back and looked at more photos of Chelsea (thank goodness for the blog!).
Oh my goodness, I think it IS Chelsea!! There is that white patch on the chest and the white marking on the feet.
So I texted Yi Lin and she asked for photos.
These were some of the photos I managed to take:
By now, Chelsea allowed me to approach to take a closer picture.
The tell-tale white markings on the feet.
“Is she wearing a choke chain?”, Yi Lin asked.
The choke chain and the white patch on the chest.
YES!! It is Chelsea!! Yi Lin was already on her way to my house.
We got Chelsea to come closer to our house and offered her water to drink and catfood to eat.
Finally, we managed to get Chelsea into our house compound.
The PatioCats weren’t afraid. All six of them were around and looked curiously.
Later, Yi Lin told me that Chelsea doesn’t like cats and would chase them. But Chelsea seemed okay with all the PatioCats.
Chelsea seemed hungry, so we gave her more catfood. By now, she was very friendly, or did she remember me from six years back? We’ll never know.
The moment Yi Lin stepped through the gate, Chelsea started whining!
REUNITED!! After ten long days!
Yi Lin said she was actually at her office, doing a LOST DOG poster when my texts arrived.
We’ll never know how Chelsea ended up in our neighbourhood, or how she ended up on our road. It’s a long way from home and she must have crossed that busy main road as well.
We’ll never really understand how a dog’s mind and senses work, but Chelsea is safely home now! What a miraculous story!!
