Come and find out how the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) battles to end animal cruelty. Share with us the joy in helping wild animals to have a second chance at life and to be free again; animals just like Lucas.

Lucas, an Asiatic softshell turtle, was found at West Coast Park, suffering from major skin lesions and wounds. Although this species is native to Singapore, it is highly likely that Lucas had been kept as a pet, as he was quite docile. These turtles are not found in coastal areas as they are a freshwater species, so it is likely that he had been abandoned by his owner on the beach. Another possibility is that he was released as a “mercy release”. The damage to Lucas’s body was probably as a result of being released into the sea, as the saltwater would be harmful to him.

He was brought to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) for specialist care. Thankfully, he made a full recovery, and was returned to his native freshwater habitat as soon as he was fit and ready. Click on the video link to see Lucas go home!

Abandoning or releasing animals in public parks (and other areas) is illegal in Singapore.

Under the PARKS & TREES REGULATIONS, MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF NATIONAL PARKS, NATURE RESERVES AND PUBLIC PARKS – 10.—(1) No person shall, except with the approval of the Commissioner – leave, abandon or release any animal in a national park or public park.

Please share this post with your friends and spread awareness about why the release/abandonment of wild animals is cruel and illegal!
