Thank you very much, Mission Rabies, WVS, for helping the street dogs in Penang!
GEORGE TOWN: International NGO Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) is ready to supply 50,000 vaccines at any time to Penang for free to cover all pets and stray dogs and assist with manpower to fully conduct mass vaccinations.
However, even though WVS has the vaccines ready and can mobilise manpower, the mountain of paperwork and application processes that must be completed beforehand, would mean they can only arrive in Penang at the end of the year.
Among the major requirements would be the need for approvals from the Health Ministry as well as the Veterinary Services and Immigration Departments.
Penang has reported three cases of humans being bitten by rabid dogs.
Although the stray dogs tested positive for rabies, the victims tested negative.
We appeal to the relevant authorities to please fast track the paper work so that this insane madness of mass culling will come to an end and a more effective, compassionate and proven-successful method can be implemented.
We appeal to the authorities to please stop the killing of innocent animals. Killing does not work to contain the disease. It makes it even worse because of the vacuum effect. Vaccinating 70% of the street population is the way to go.
A healthy, vaccinated street dog population is the best protection for people from rabies. – Mission Rabies
