Re Rabies: Advice From A Malaysian Vet

Understandably, many of us are groping in the dark regarding rabies and what best to do for our animals. Below is advice from a Malaysian vet, Dr Clement Anthony. On his clinic FB page, he has given permission to share this widely. Thank you very much, Dr.

Hi to all pet lovers
The recent presence of Rabies in our Country is very sad,
Internationally we have been free for some time and now sadly we have
to deal with this disease again.
The public have been calling the clinic to request to have their pets
vaccinated against rabies.
Just a few points to keep every one’s mind at ease.
1. Malaysia is not endemic for Rabies.
2. What we see is a sporadic (scattered / isolated) presence of the
disease in certain states.
3. Contact of the disease is through an open wound form a infected
animal or in contact with saliva from an infected animal.
4. All animals are susceptible to the virus – especially mammals. This
means cats, dogs, cattle, rats & list goes on and on.
5. Rabies has two forms the Furious and Paralytic (Dumb) form.
Current status as know to us through the media and also from Dato’ Dr.
Quaza Nizamuddin (Deputy Director General DVS) is the Northern
Territory only.
Vaccinating our pets down south is not necessary. By dogs owners
vaccinating against Rabies in our country where Rabies is not endemic,
is wrong.
6. The most important thing to do is keep your pets within the
compound of the house (dogs & cats).
7. Dog owners when you take your pets out for a walk always keep the
pet on a leash.
8. Stay away from stray dogs and cats.
9. If you see a pack of stray dogs please inform the authority,
Department of Veterinary Services in your state or the nearest town
council.
10. Above all please do not hurt these animals, just because they are
dogs. The dogs did not ask for the disease, it just got to them. Is it
not their fault to be born a dog or cat.
If we blame them for the disease and hurt innocent dogs or cats, do we
then hurt other humans for the spread of “EBOLA” or “AIDS”
As much as we are protective of our loved pets, lets also show
compassion, to the homeless pets.
It is not their fault entirely, we too (humans) have to be blamed for this.
