INTEGRATING 3 RESCUED MACAQUES AS PART OF THEIR REHABILITATION

Last week you read about Mia and Velda: long tailed macaques who were rescued on the same day. And such is life, there will always be unexpected surprises. Just when we thought we were all set to rehabilitate two macaques, a new addition joined in! And this time, its a baby macaque!

Uniqlo, an infant long-tailed macaque, was rescued along University Road on the 2nd of September at 7.30pm after a resident spotted him hanging around the area alone without his family. A macaque of Uniqlos age should be with his family at all times, especially his mother. In addition, Uniqlo had suffered two punctured wounds after being bitten by a dog. A door to door survey revealed that the area was undergoing land clearing to make way for new houses. In addition, trapping exercises had been carried out in the area. Uniqlo may well have become separated from or even lost his family due to these reasons.

As macaques are highly sociable animals, Uniqlo was integrated with Mia and Velda. It took a few days before Mia and Velda fully accepted Uniqlo. All three macaques have gone through various challenges individually but, as part of their rehabilitation, integration aids in speeding up their rate of recovery. The strong bonds formed between them will help them to remain wild and enable them to survive when they head back to their natural environment.
