It is with great regret that we learnt today of the passing of Dominic, who was an icon at the Soi Dog shelter for a number of years. Estimated to be at least 10 years old, his actual age will never truly be known.
Dominic arrived at Soi Dog in 2007. He had been living in a temple and the surrounding streets. Having lost all his hair and becoming subject to abuse (locals referred to him as the pig dog because of his black skin and absence of any fur), we brought him to our shelter. The staff allowed him to roam free, because he caused no trouble and he was so miserable in the runs.
Where Dominic most liked to go was the volunteer meeting area, where he became in effect, a mascot. The only problem he had was with the sun – he had to have children’s sun block applied to his skin every day. Although it was believed all his hair follicles were dead, he did in later times start to show some fur re-growth.
Although it would be fair to say that Dominic would not have done well in a canine beauty contest, he more than made up for this with his character – a gentler dog would be difficult to find.
Everybody expected that Dominic would spend the rest of his days at our shelter but earlier this year, a miracle happened. Lisa, a vet nurse from Canada, came to volunteer at Soi Dog and she promptly fell in love with Dominic.
Despite knowing that he was coming to the end of his days, Lisa was determined to give him the experience of a home for the first time in his life. Earlier this year, he departed for that new life in Canada. All the staff were thrilled to see updates of Dominic enjoying his new life and photos of him exploring the Canadian countryside.
We are all saddened that his time there could not have been longer, but we believe that dogs have fairly short memories, and when Dominic passed away, his memories would have been of living in a home where he was loved and cherished. No dog can ask for more.
Our deepest sympathies go to Lisa and her family.
Because Dominic was such an icon at Soi Dog and spent so many years living in the volunteer area, we are naming this area in his honour and placing a photo of him there.
He will never be forgotten.
