ARE DOLPHINS CULTURAL BEINGS?
The idea that our oceans teem with cultural animals and have for millions of years is the central conclusion of a new book by two scientists. And it’s a convincing one.
Whales and dolphins, as they forage for food and interact with each other in their social units, may learn specific ways of doing things from their mothers or their pod mates.
This undoubtedly means that the capture and removal of wild dolphins from their pods to supply the captive dolphin industry (which sadly still occurs to this day) can have serious implications for wild dolphins.
Read more about the fascinating insights into whale and dolphin culture in this interview with authors Hal Whitehead and Luke Rendell, as they discuss their book The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins.
Anthropologist Barbara J. King interviews two whale scientists who say the term “culture” shouldn’t be reserved for human groups.
