Grieving Dolphin Seen Carrying The Body Of Her Dead Calf

A DOLPHINS GRIEF

Heres some evidence which suggests that certain emotional experiences of dolphins are perhaps not so unlike our own.

Researchers from the conservation group Oceanomare Delphis recently made a heartbreaking discovery off the coast of Italy. They encountered a bottlenose dolphin supporting the body of her deceased calf, apparently unwilling to leave it behind even after death.

This apparent grieving behaviour has been observed in dolphins on other occasions, with dolphins seemingly unwilling to part with the bodies of relatives that have died.

Such a clear indication of the complex emotional world of dolphins once again highlights the fact that dolphins have no place in captivity, because of the probable depth of their feelings and capacity to suffer. And we are reminded that the capture of wild dolphins for the captive dolphin industry, which often disrupts pods and tears families apart, is undoubtedly cruel.

For the love of animals. Pass it on.
