HINDHEDE TROOP BIDS FAREWELL TO THEIR REIGNING LEADER ACHILLES

Mention the name Achilles, and many people immediately call to mind the troop leader with a distinct vocalisation, charming features and exceptional leadership. Known to many researchers and residents living near Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Achilles sadly passed away on the night of Tuesday the 21st of July 2015, from injuries sustained possibly as a result of collision with a car or being bitten by a snake.

Researchers and residents who have known him for many years did not expect Achilles to pass on so soon. He headed the Hindhede troop in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, and his presence contributed greatly to the research and observational studies carried out by many researchers. He has helped us better understand macaque behaviour and family structure.

When ACRES shared the news of Achilless passing, researches and residents recalled their individual stories and fond memories they had of him. He was a beautiful adult male who didnt bother anybody. He has made an impact on many of us and – most importantly his family.

As Achilles has been leading his family for many years, his passing has undoubtedly had a huge impact on them. They have become quieter. The role of a troop leader is very important for a macaque family to function well. Hence, the Hindhede troop will require time to restore stability.

Achilless passing shows how vulnerable and fragile life is, even for a leader in a family of macaques. It also shows the impact that the removal of one macaque can have on a macaque family.

As the ACRES Macaque Team is working on Monkey Herding project in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, we will be working closely with NParks and residents to monitor the changes in the Hindhede troop movements and behaviour patterns.

ACRES would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the residents who alerted us to Achilless plight, to ARVC for attending to him immediately despite their hectic schedule, and NParks officers, Noeleen and Angelyn, for helping to monitor his troop.
