BE PART OF ACRESS NEW VOLUNTEER TEAM TEAM MONKEY GUARDS!
Always wanted to help the Singapores long-tailed macaques but dont know how to? Then heres your chance!
Well be embarking on a pilot project in Bukit Timah to explore alternatives in human-macaque management. A modern way of working towards a long-term, humane solution to resolve human-macaque tensions is to engage Monkey Guards. Monkey Guards, which have proven to be effective in countries such as Gibraltar, are currently not utilised in Singapore. We have conducted experimental studies in a few houses and they have shown promising results. We want to continue this positive collaboration but we need extra hands from YOU!
Heres a brief description of your job scope:
First line of defence
Act as defence that the macaques will need to cross first if they want to gain access into the premises.
Guard against close interaction or contact with any macaques that enter the premises.
Be positioned at strategic interaction zones within the premises, especially during the hours when macaques are most active.
Observation and research
Identify and follow troop(s) in the vicinity of the premises to monitor their movements. Heres where special skills like photography/videography will come in handy!
Identify troops entry and exit point.
Throughout the time, conduct systemic monitoring and charting of changes within the relevant macaque troops.
Empowerment
Residents will be taught how to behave in the presence of macaques.
Those who need assistance will be attended to promptly.
Instill community spirit in residents, urging them to protect the environment.
If you are 21 years old and above and keen to be part of this new team, then join us for this workshop and training session (details in accompanying image) on the 5th of September! Simply drop a mail to Sabrina at Sabrina@acres.org.sg and feel free to ask her any questions! Save the date and spread the word!
