Chester's Final Journey
Tweet |
Chester was heading for a sad end in an animal shelter before being rescued by a foster mum who intends to give him an ‘awesome last ride’. This terminally ill dog is ending his days with treats and affection after a kind woman vowed to fill his remaining time with ‘happiness and love’.
Nicole Elliot was moved to intervene when she saw a picture of scruffy Chester posted by an animal charity stating ‘hospice needed’. Nicole, from Georgia, USA, took Chester home after he was abandoned by his previous owners and rescued by the Animal Ark Rescue charity.
Elliot took Chester into her care simply to give him the love and care he deserves during his final days in the world. She has taken on the role of hospice foster mum and says she plans to fill his days with treats and belly rubs . She says, “He wasn’t in the best shape. they bathed him and shaved away all of the matted, dirty hair. They found a very large tumour on his side, and had it removed. Since then they have shown up all over his body.”
Nicole thought about the commitment she was making before taking Chester on. “I slept on it, and woke up knowing it was the right thing to do, I knew that it would be my responsibility to make his final days the best I could. I fell in love the moment I saw him.”
The pooch now has thousands of followers on his Facebook page, ‘Chester’s final journey’ and Nicole is open to suggestions for his ‘bucket list’. So far he’s been taken on a shopping spree, eaten ice cream, splashed about in rivers and been given a soothing oatmeal milk bath.
Chester is blessed that someone like Nicole has stepped up to make his last days joyful and comfortable, but it’s a shame his original owners didn’t share Nicole’s dedication. So in honour of Chester (and Nicole!), please consider adopting an older pet and making sure that he or she lives happily in the golden years, and if you adopt a kitten or puppy, please remember it’s a commitment for the animal’s entire life!
