SINGAPOREANS DO NOT SUPPORT THE CONSUMPTION OF SHARKS FIN

Only 10% of Singaporeans feel that the consumption of sharks fin should be allowed, in a survey commissioned by ACRES and conducted independently by Millward Brown early this year.

It is estimated that over a 100 million sharks are killed each year for their fins. Shark populations are now reduced by 70% in some species and up to 98% in species including tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, bull sharks and blacktip sharks. Sharks are slow to recover from over-hunting because they are slow breeding and slow-maturing apex predators.

Removing sharks will result in the collapse of the entire marine food web. Overfishing of sharks cascades into a sudden uprising of the species they prey on, causing an abundance of skates, rays and smaller sharks, which then steadily devastate populations of animals further down the food chain, like shellfish.

Singapore used to be one of the largest consumers of sharks fin. It appears that the tide is turning.

Witness the majesty of sharks in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4-p_8NaG54 , and do your part to protect sharks and our seas by saying no to sharks fin. You may also support ecotourism ventures that promote the protection of sharks, such as that provided by The Dorsal Effect http://thedorsaleffect.com/, and shark sanctuaries see http://www.sharksavers.org/en/get-active/dive-to-help-sharks/ecotourism/.

We look forward to working closely with the government on exploring and implementing programmes to ensure that people and wild animals can co-exist in harmony.

Note: We will be sharing more of the survey results every week! ACRES chose to partner Millward Brown for this survey as they are experts in the field of market surveys and they ensured that the survey methodology was unbiased, scientific and representative.
