PRESS RELEASE BY SPCA SELANGOR, 3 JUNE 2015
———————————————————————
Catch & Kill does not work – but yet again we see a “Stray Dog Bounty Hunting” Campaign.
Named the “One Dog RM10” campaign, the Tanjung Malim municipal council offered reward money for those willing to catch
stray dogs and bring them to the council to be culled. The campaign went viral on social media, with NGO’s and animal supporters across Malaysia in an uproar as we saw a return to the dark ages.
A full retraction was confirmed by midnight last night less than 24 hours after the proposed campaign was publicised through on-line media sharing.
“The power of public opinion has won the day. We are relieved to see that the proposed campaign by Tanjong Malim Municipal Council has been nipped in the bud,” said SPCA Selangor Chairman, Christine Chin.
SPCA Selangor thanks SPCA Ipoh for moving fast to demand a retraction, and the overwhelming weight of public opinion demanding it be stopped.
SPCA Selangor Patron, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye was able to confirm through YB Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan, MP for Tanjong Malim, that the campaign had been halted in its tracks.
“It’s time to change the game and we now have forward thinking Councils, within Selangor and Klang Valley, Pekan, and Kelantan all of whom are working together with SPCA Selangor to be proactive in setting up safe stray management projects that will see genuine and lasting answers to stray animal issues,” said Chin.
SPCA Selangor is already working with animal lovers, forward-thinking and dynamic Municipal Councils, residents of affected communities, animal feeders, and independent rescuer’s to improve the lives of community animals.
“The time is now, to band together and show a united front and a call for action. Working for a policy of Trap, Neuter, Release, Manage (TNRM), we need to educate, activate and garner
support for safe strays on our streets,” added Lorna Fisher, Chief Operations Officer of SPCA Selangor.
On the eve of the new Animal Welfare Act, only initiatives that will bring about measurable control in a humane, effective, sustainable and socially acceptable manner should be entertained.
