THE LESSER KNOWN SIDE OF ALPHA MALE MACAQUES

They�re often seen as the strict, hostile, watchful and defensive ones. There is a need for these highly misunderstood leaders to display such characteristics, as they have an important role to play for their family. They need to protect their family from any possible threat. They need to lead their family well, as their family�s safety is in their hands. They need to also uphold their position as an alpha male. Hence, they create this impression of an unfriendly and fearful individual.

But let�s also acknowledge the softer and little-known side of them. They make great play buddies to their offspring! It is heartening to watch a full grown adult male – who is capable of disciplining his offspring severely – become so gentle and friendly when their offspring pull him in to play. At times, alpha males allow themselves to be bullied by their offspring, as they tower above his head or ride on his back!

So, the next time you see an alpha male macaque with his family, remember that – just like us – they are unique individuals with big responsibilities and plenty of compassion for their family.
