As dog guardians, we would never do anything to intentionally harm our pets, however, many are inadvertently doing so by leaving their pups chained outside. Some pet parents do this believing that their dogs enjoy being outdoors while others have more malicious intentions and chain their dogs because they want them to serve as “guard dogs” or simply don’t want to take care of their animals. In either circumstance, the dog winds up on a short chain with limited mobility, vulnerable to predators, the elements, and a number of other potential threats.
Additionally, according to the Humane Society of the United States, chained dogs tend to be more aggressive as a result of anxiety and agitation. Dogs are naturally territorial and when they are confined to such a small space with little to no other socialization or stimulation, they become incredibly protective and can act out like Alex, the dog in this video.
To outsiders, Alex’s barking and snarling make it seem like he is a vicious or aggressive dog when he is really just stressed and acting on his territorial instincts. When his rescuer gets him off the tether, he turns into a completely different dog!
This is not to say that dogs who act out aggressively when tethered aren’t dangerous – they still do pose a threat to individuals who are not trained to manage them – but seeing Alex’s transformation illustrates how subjecting dogs to these conditions can be harmful to both the dog and their guardians.
